There’s an undeniable sweet spot in early fall when it’s too cool for a T-shirt but not quite cold enough to break out the heavy knits. We’re talking about prime sweatshirt weather and it’s safe to say we’re in the thick of it right now. A classic crewneck gives you just enough warmth without feeling bulky, and it works with nearly everything already in your closet. From jeans and chinos to fatigue pants and cords.

The difference this season is in the fit. The best crewnecks are a little more relaxed than the trim, tidy versions we wore in seasons past. Look for a roomier body, slightly dropped shoulders or old-school raglan sleeves that give the sweatshirt some natural slouch. Garment-dyed fabrics, enzyme washes and brushed interiors only make them better, lending a new sweatshirt the softness and lived-in character of one you’ve owned for years.

And while a navy or heather grey crewneck will never steer you wrong, fall is a good excuse to introduce some color. Racing green, mustard yellow and other rich, slightly muted shades feel particularly fresh right now. Wear one on its own while the weather allows, then layer it under a barn jacket, chore coat or leather jacket when the temperature finally drops.
