The Return of the Graphic Tee

For a while, the graphic tee got a bad rap. It became shorthand for loud logos, novelty slogans and internet jokes that wore out faster than the cotton. But this season, it’s making a convincing comeback—not as a punchline, but as a piece of design. The best ones feel considered, drawing from vintage sportswear, old travel souvenirs, museum gift shops, album art and hand-drawn illustrations that look as good framed on a wall as they do tucked into a pair of pleated trousers. Designers and brands are embracing graphics with a little more restraint, treating the T-shirt as a canvas rather than a billboard.

And that’s also what makes them so easy to wear. A great graphic tee does the heavy lifting, adding personality to an otherwise simple outfit of relaxed jeans, chinos or tailored shorts. And unlike the ironic statement shirts of years past, today’s best versions don’t scream for attention. Instead, they hint at good taste, shared interests and an appreciation for thoughtful design and history. Take a pick from our team’s current crop of favorites.

5 Stylish Items to Buy This Week

We know Todd Snyder makes one helluva Timex. The designer has a knack for making timeless pieces feel new again, and his latest take on the Timex Marlin ($199) is no exception. Swapping the usual leather for a stainless steel mesh bracelet gives the ’60s-era watch a cleaner, more versatile look that works just as well with a suit as it does with a T-shirt. It’s slim, understated and perfect for any guy who appreciates the finer details. The real question is do you want the silver dial or the blush pink or aquamarine blue?
