There’s a brief window at the start of fall when getting dressed feels exciting again. After months of tees, shorts and whatever keeps you from overheating, you can finally start adding some substance back into the rotation. Which is why we’re kicking off this year’s “Fall Foundation” series with a piece that works particularly well during these in-between weeks: the work shirt.

You might also know it as an explorer shirt or field shirt, but the formula is largely the same: a long-sleeve button-up cut from something sturdy and substantial, finished with generously sized flap pockets at the chest. It’s got the rugged good looks of something pulled from an old Army surplus shop, but today’s versions have been cleaned up with better fabrics, more flattering fits and thoughtful details.

And that versatility is exactly what makes it such a fantastic foundation piece. Wear one open over a T-shirt while the days are still warm, then button it up and throw a jacket over it once the temperature drops. Go classic with brushed cotton, canvas or corduroy, or opt for a softer wool blend if you want something a little more refined. Either way, it brings some welcome texture and utility to your fall wardrobe while actually making the work of getting dressed a whole lot easier.
