Your favorite sweatshirt, minus the sleeves. Turns out, that’s a pretty good idea.

The Best Short-Sleeve Sweatshirts for Men

There’s something inherently cool about a sweatshirt with the sleeves chopped short. Maybe it’s the Steve McQueen connection or the old-school gym-class vibe. Maybe it’s the fact that it looks like something you might’ve customized yourself years ago and never stopped wearing. In any case, you get the substantial feel and easy comfort of a crewneck, minus the extra fabric. Which makes it especially useful when a T-shirt feels a little flimsy but an actual sweatshirt is too much.

Of course, the best ones don’t actually look like you attacked an old crewneck with a pair of scissors. They’re cut this way on purpose, with roomier proportions, substantial cotton and sleeves that hit at just the right spot. Think of one as a heavyweight tee with a little more presence. Wear it with shorts and sneakers now, then jeans or chinos when things cool down.

And that’s really the appeal. It’s a simple piece that makes a basic outfit look a little more considered without seeming like you tried too hard. There’s some retro athleticism baked in, but it doesn’t have to read “vintage jock.” Go boxy with beat-up denim, tuck a cleaner version into pleated trousers or layer one over a long-sleeve tee. It’s a slightly odd garment, sure. But that’s also what makes it good.

5 Stylish Items to Buy This Week

Don’t have much storage space? This minimalist bed ($3,100) has the warm, low-key good looks you want from a walnut bed frame, then quietly works four oversized storage drawers into the design. That means extra sheets, sweaters and the clothes you swear you’re going to donate can disappear without sacrificing floor space to another dresser. Plus, the rounded corners, a slim headboard and a tight footprint keep the whole thing looking clean and surprisingly light.
