Some classics just need the right update. This season's relaxed popover shirts feel fresh, effortless and surprisingly versatile.

The Summer’s Easiest Shirt

The popover shirt has always occupied a certain sweet spot in the wardrobes of stylish men. Dressier than a camp shirt, cooler than a basic polo and more relaxed than a traditional button-down, it’s the kind of piece that suggests you dress for the occasion (but aren’t exactly in a rush to get there). For a while, though, the style quietly slipped out of rotation. Good ones became surprisingly difficult to find, relegated to vintage shops and the occasional heritage label that refused to let the silhouette disappear.

But this summer, the shirt’s back in a big way. Better yet, it’s returned with a looser attitude. Today’s best versions are cut with easy, boxy proportions that drape cleanly over the body, making them feel right at home with baggy shorts, wide-leg trousers, washed denim and relaxed chinos. The half-placket design lends just enough structure without looking fussy, striking that elusive balance between polished and effortless.

There’s also something undeniably rakish about a popover. It slips on just as easily over swim trunks after a morning at the beach as it does beneath an unstructured linen suit for a summer wedding. That versatility is exactly why we’re so stoked to see it make a comeback. Some of our favorite brands have revived the silhouette with thoughtful updates that feel thoroughly modern while preserving the easygoing charm that made the shirt a warm-weather classic in the first place.

5 Stylish Items to Buy This Week

A little light can go a long way. Mushroom lamps are having a moment, but this one ($54.99) gets the proportions just right. And the thick, ceramic texture provides a more grounded feel. The rounded silhouette casts a warm, diffused glow that instantly softens a room, while the oversized base makes it look a whole lot more expensive than it really is. Position it on a bedside table, tuck it into a bookshelf, or place it on an entry console and watch the entire space feel a little more inviting.
