Have you been avoiding henley shirts? Me too, but now’s the time to bring them back.

Redemption Season for the Henley Shirt

For a while, the henley had something of a perception problem. It got overexposed, overworked and, frankly, mishandled. Too many guys treated it like a shortcut to looking put-together, and the results showed: overly tight fits on muscular builds, perpetually unbuttoned plackets veering into try-hard territory, and throw-it-on styling that felt careless rather than considered. What was once a classically versatile staple started reading as predictable at best, frat-adjacent at worst. The style-conscious crowd felt it was too bro-y and basic so they did what they tend to do—bench it.

But time has a way of resetting the narrative. After a few years out of the rotation, the henley feels fresh again, largely because the way we wear clothes has shifted. There’s more emphasis now on texture, fabrication and silhouette—areas where the henley, done right, actually excels. It’s no longer about using it as a stand-in for a basic tee; it’s about recognizing its nuance: the subtle ribbing, the soft structure, the way the placket adds just enough visual interest without trying too hard.

The move now is to treat the henley as a lightweight layering piece with a bit of intention behind it. Look for elevated fabrics—slub cotton, fine-gauge knits, even blends with a touch of silk or linen—and don’t be afraid to play with proportion. Sizing up slightly lets the shirt drape in a way that feels modern and relaxed, not sloppy. Worn under a chore jacket, paired with tailored trousers or even layered beneath an open button-down, the henley regains its footing. Not as a fallback, but as a considered, quietly stylish choice for spring.
