Good/Better/Best

Cashmere Beanies

A beanie can be one of the seasonal hats you wear most, but it’s often the one you spent the least on. It gets stuffed into coat pockets, left on trains and replaced every other winter. That’s fine, right up until you put on a cashmere one. It’s lighter than wool and warmer than it looks. It’s soft enough that you forget it’s even on your head. No itch, no static and no red line across your forehead at the end of the day.

What separates a good one comes down to the yarn and the knit. Ideally, you want 100% cashmere, since blends cost less but rarely feel the same. You also want a rib with some stretch and recovery, plus a cuff you can fold to dial in the fit. Color is the easy part. Grey, charcoal or navy will work with every coat you own.

And spending more isn’t the jump from bad cashmere to good. It’s simply about thickness, texture and name. A basic beanie gets you the fiber at a price that barely registers. Spend more and you get a chunkier knit with real character. At the top end, it’s heavier yarn and a heritage label. Here are the ones we’d buy before it gets too cold.

Good

The Everyday Bargain

+ It’s made from grade-A Mongolian cashmere, whose long fibers hold their softness and strength better than the short, cheap stuff

+ Quince knits it at a higher yarn tension, which gives it a thicker, more substantial feel than what you’d expect at this price

+ The folded cuff is adjustable, so you can wear it slouched or pulled snug over the ears. It also comes in two sizes (XS/S and M/L) instead of one-size-fits-most

+ Available in nine different colorways, making it ideal for gifting too

Cashmere beanie, $34.90 at Quince

Better

Ruggedly Chunky

+ It’s 100% cashmere spun into a two-ply yarn, which makes it thicker and more durable than the single-ply knits at the bottom of the market

+ A 7-gauge knit gives the rib a chunky, substantial feel with real heft on the head. Wear it cuffed and snug or let it slouch.

+ Each beanie is washed after knitting for extra softness, so it feels broken in from the first wear

+ It comes in more than 20 colors, from heather grey and navy to kelly green and scarlet

Cashmere beanie, $98 at Alex Mill

Best

The Luxe Heavyweight

+ It’s 100% cashmere spun into thick-gauge yarns, which makes it the densest and warmest knit of the three

+ The deep rib-knit construction gives it plenty of texture and a plush hand without adding bulk

+ A fold-over cuff and a 9.75-inch bottom opening give it a relaxed fit that won’t squeeze your head by lunch

+ It comes in five colors, from a neutral charcoal to a bold orange or bottle green if you want your hat to do some of the talking

Rib-knit cashmere beanie, $178 at Ralph Lauren

AeroPress's most refined brewer swaps the original's plastic for a walnut-wood plunger, metal hardware and a borosilicate-glass chamber, while keeping the same immersion-and-pressure brewing method that built its cult following. A wood-accented manual grinder arrives alongside it, marking the brand's furthest step yet from its utilitarian roots.

Parquet flooring has been part of European interiors for centuries, from the grand rooms of French palaces to the apartments and homes we admire today. Made by arranging pieces of wood into geometric patterns, it brings a level of detail and craftsmanship that ordinary floorboards often lack.
