The easiest home upgrade isn't a new sofa or an expensive piece of art. It's a small lamp. Or three. Here's why we're convinced every room could use a little more glow.

Your Place Needs More Small Lamps

If you’re a longtime Valet. reader, then you’ve likely heard this before. But it warrants saying again: We’re convinced there’s not a single spot in your home—and we mean not one—that couldn’t be improved by the warm glow of a diminutive lamp. Think about it. The entryway where you drop your keys. That neglected corner of your work nook. A simple shelf that could use a little personality. Nightstands and side tables, of course. But even the kitchen counter or bathroom vanity. A shrunken lamp does more than simply illuminate a space. It adds atmosphere, creates a sense of intimacy and makes an otherwise ordinary corner feel considered. And unlike the harsh glare of overhead lighting, a small pool of warm light has a way of making everything around it look a little better. Including you.

Of course, the appeal isn’t purely practical. These little lights are essentially functional sculptures, offering an easy opportunity to introduce some character into a room without committing to a major decorating project. Which is why so many designer-outfitted spaces are chockfull of lighting options. And right now, the options are better than ever.

There are sleek, industrial designs in brushed steel and rugged metals, organic shapes crafted from wood and stone, and delicate glass pieces that look like something you’d find in a beautifully appointed European hotel. Some are inexpensive enough to buy on impulse, while others are investment-worthy objects you'll keep for decades. Whether your taste leans midcentury, minimalist or somewhere in between, there’s a lamp that fits.

The best part? You don’t even need an outlet anymore. While traditional plug-in lamps certainly have their place, the growing selection of rechargeable, cordless designs means you can put a little light just about anywhere. On a dinner table, beside the bathtub or tucked into a bookcase without an unsightly cord dangling down the shelves. Move one around as needed or leave a few stationed throughout your place. The trick is to think less about lighting an entire room and more about creating inviting little pockets of warmth. Start with one. Then another. Before long, you might find yourself reaching for the overhead switch a whole lot less.
