Summer evenings are the best. I’ve yet to enjoy a bonfire this year but hey, I have 54 days left to have one. I’ll get around to it eventually.

What  We’re Wearing

Easy Summer Nights

J.Crew Giant-Fit Chino Pant

There’s still plenty of summer left. Whether you have a proper vacation planned or just plan on hanging around the house, you've got plenty of opportunities to soak up the good times before the colder months arrive.

The tail end of summer reminds me of my favorite time of year, September, because it's sunny yet generally cool all day long. Now, we can get a little preview of what's to come at nighttime. I love catching rays and swimming as much as the next person, but once the sun goes down, a toasty bonfire with great music is where I thrive.

Summer nights—be it around the fire, at a rooftop bar or just a friend's patio—requires the perfect outfit to transition from a warm day to a breezy evening. You want different textures and light layers. The Pines shirt from Knickerbocker is made from a twill and linen fabric from Italy and has two front pockets giving the shirt some versatility to be worn like a jacket. A raglan sweatshirt will always be in my backseat because I get cold easily—plus, it always complements any outfit—and this one from Body of Work is updated in a cropped fit for a more contemporary look. Lastly, the standout piece are the buzzy “giant-fit chinos” from J.Crew. Brought back from the brand's archival collection from the '90s, the pant is roomy, durable and perfect for all seasons. So why not break them in now?

Making the Case for ...

Italian-Made Leather Derbies

Horatio Drury derby

You should know British footwear brand Horatio. Over the past few years, they’ve built a solid following for their loafers, sturdy lace-ups and Camber heavyweight fleece sweatsuits. If you’re a regular Valet. reader, you may’ve spotted some of their loafers before. And their co-founder Nicholas Walter is one of the best-dressed men on the internet. What I love about the brand is that they are taking traditional dress shoes and mixing them into everyday life—not just wearing them sparingly to a nice dinner or a business event.

I’ve yet to own a pair, but they’re definitely on my shopping wishlist. The brand has recently debuted a sharp looking lace-up collection, and the black leather Drury derbies seem to be the perfect all-purpose shoe. They’ll set you back about $300, but the construction of the shoe is well worth the purchase. Hand stitched by skilled Italian craftsmen, all of the requisite details are here: A smooth, well-finished French leather and a soft glove leather lining with a suede heel. The split toe is also a great alternative to the usual cap-toe. It gives the shoe a more workwear look and feel, allowing it to be worn more casually. The Vibram sole on a shoe offers you the same benefits of a Land Rover Defender—luxurious, sure, but it gives you permission to rough it up a bit.

Put another way, these derbies have all the bells and whistles. Not to mention, Horatio has a signed document on their site attesting to the quality of their Goodyear welting. While shoes with this feature typically take a minute to break in, the soles will literally last a lifetime. One great thing about paying top dollar for footwear is that they are made from fine leather, so getting them dirty and keeping them clean should be easy. These would look great beat up with a little character or shined and polished with a tuxedo.
