Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale is happening and I’m wondering if you all have your carts as full as I do? If not, maybe I can help with that.

Drawstring Shorts

Todd Snyder weekend shorts

For a while, shorts were not something that stylish men were reaching for in their closets during the hotter seasons. I think we were all fed up with the lame chino shorts, lumpy cargo styles and bad jorts. But shorts made a resurgence a few summers ago when cool guys started to pull on Patagonia baggies more leisurely and not just for outdoor activities like hiking or swimming. The seven-inch inseam gave way to five inches and suddenly, the unsought-after garment gained popularity (and legs were free to get a full tan). The best shorts today typically have a drawstring and come in easy and comfortable fabrics like woven cotton, linen and nylon for much-needed breathability. And so many great brands make them now that they cover the full gambit of price points. Depending on how often and where you’ll be wearing them, how much you decide to spend is up to you. We’re just here to help point you to the ones worth you money.

Good
Abercrombie and Fitch pull-on short
Good

6" inseam and side slits add a subtle but nice detail

Thinner fabric drawstring

Slanted pockets for ease and access to everyday carry essentials

The fabric is a blend made with lyocell, making the material "slinkier" than plain cotton

Pull-on short, $60 / $48 by Abercrombie & Fitch

Better
Todd Snyder weekend short
Better

A shorter inseam at 5"

Only has one back pocket

Higher-quality elastic in the waistband that's reinforced with stitching, so it can handle more wear and tear

A lot of stretch in the fabric, which could be good or bad depending on your tastes

Weekend short,$98 by Todd Snyder

Best
J.Crew dock short
Best

6" inseam with a contrast drawstring for a vintage look

Two back pockets that have a button closure for added security

100% cotton so you can wear and wash these a lot, but be sure to hang dry so you don't have to worry about shrinkage

This fabric is easier to spot-clean unlike if you were to spill on the previous two shorts

Dock short,$59.50 by J.Crew

JJJJound x Reebok

For JJJJound's fourth collaboration with Reebok, the Montreal-based design collective brings its minimalist touch to the Reebok NPC II. The low-top sneaker was originally designed for tennis players in 1985, but JJJJound has modernized it with a streamlined all-white colorway and plush terry fabric interior.

Shopping the Sale

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale officially kicked off last Friday and ends on the 31st of this month. Which means you still have plenty of time to pick up some great items at an impressive discount. This is when you stockpile your favorite grooming products or pick up the home item you've been watching. Of course, there's a wide range of menswear brands on sale too, so take your pick. Here's what I've got in my cart so far: A breezy button-down from Oliver Spencer in a neutral olive green shade. The coffeemaker every coffee snob uses and a pair of khaki-colored Converse kicks that I plan on wearing with any and everything. Lastly, some quality face cream that I feel less guilty about buying when it's on discount.
