What We’re Wearing

Fall Date Night

Buck Mason wool graduate blazer

Autumn provides an ideal backdrop for date nights and weekend outings, doesn’t it? Don't pass up the opportunity—the crisp weather and changing leaves automatically set an easygoing, romantic tone. Fall is a transitional season, so let your wardrobe do the same with a few adaptable essentials. The key is to look presentable and put together, but still casual. A classic oxford is a safe choice, and then layer it with a cozy sweater. Or consider swapping out both for a light turtleneck, especially in the evening. Round out the look with some ruggedly handsome jeans and a pair of suede loafers. Of course, a wool blazer is the ideal layering piece, especially if you decide on an after-drinks stroll. Don't forget a unique fragrance. It's the finishing touch that not only ensures you smell good but also gives you something to talk about when your date inevitably leans in and asks what you're wearing.

Making the Case for …

A Cult-Favorite Dutch Coffee Machine

Technivorm Moccamaster

I’ll be completely honest: I’m the type that values form over function. If I’m forced to choose between aesthetics and well, pretty much anything else (comfort, ease, practicality), I’ll choose the good-looking option every time. So I’ll admit that I was first drawn to Technivorm’s signature Moccamaster machine because of its look. The retro brewer looks like it could be from a mid-century diner. And I knew it had a reputation—the Dutch company is well known in snobby coffee circles for making exceptionally good drip coffee makers for decades. But does this thing really live up to the hype? Could it really be worth $350?

In my experience as a coffee lover, when it comes to brewers, you've got good-looking ones and you've got the machines that produce a good brew. This one really does both. Yes, it sports a stylish throwback design from 1968—the year the first Moccamaster hit stores. But more importantly, it consistently churns out perfect freshly brewed coffee that will satisfy any coffee connoisseur. When Moccamaster says that “all Moccamaster coffee brewers are certified to brew to the strict standards of the European Coffee Brewing Center (ECBC) and the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), certifications awarded only after extensive and rigorous quality control and laboratory testing,” I believe that they mean business.

So how does it brew better coffee than your average coffee maker? If you’re familiar with a Chemex, the Moccamaster basically replicates the beloved pour-over method, it just does it with little to no effort on your part. And truthfully, I think it’s better than using a Chemex, because the Moccamaster will keep the coffee perfectly warm (at a not-too-hot 175-185 degrees Fahrenheit) for an hour and a half after its brewed. My partner and I have been using it for about four years now and have no complaints. Yes, you want to descale it now and then and we did need to replace the carafe once, but ordering parts isn’t a problem and I can’t see needing to buy another coffee machine … maybe ever.
